Mitchel Livingston's heart might be in Cincinnati, where he's the presiding co-chair of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, but his mind keeps pulling him back to a 1905 farmhouse on the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia.
That's because he and his wife, Carol, won the DIY Network Blog Cabin sweepstakes in 2011 and became the owners of a three-bedroom home-away-from home that's fully furnished with lots of room for family to gather, including a spacious great room, game room and family room. I learned about Livingston's windfall last month when he was announcing the Freedom Center's exhibit of the Emancipation Proclamation. He sat down with me over breakfast earlier this month to talk about the home and why his family decided to keep it.
Livingston's wife, Carol, was the one who registered to win the Chesapeake Getaway, doing it on a whim with several family members over a Labor Day weekend. She got a call that they had won on her birthday.
“I’ll never be able to give her a birthday present now that’s even close,” Mitchel laughed.
The couple took their twin sons, Joshua and Jeremy, who are now 31 years old, to see the home and make a decision about whether to accept the gift.
